The Ashes, the small bit left after our logs have burnt, not the massacre in the cricket!

07 Aug

So were are into August and perhaps the only Ashes we are thinking about is England v Australia at cricket……unless of course, you have a woodburning stove, in which case you are probably thinking about where you are getting your winter fuel stock from.
Logs.co.com is the ONLY local, kiln dried wood supplier. All other kiln dried wood in this area is brought in from other areas, sometimes from this country, Cumbria, Scotland etc and sometimes from the Baltics in shipping containers! I have hunted high and low, but unless someone is keeping their kiln a secret (and why would they?) there is not another kiln for countless miles.
So our logs come from local trees, within 25 miles of Toddington, and we deliver within that same radius as well. We process the logs onsite into our standard log of maximum length 30cm – but you can request shorter logs is you have a small stove, we can supply bags at 20cm length on request! We dry the logs to under 20% moisture content (MC) in our own kiln, using the awkward, horrible, difficult to split, shaped bits as a fuel for the kiln boiler so that we use every single bit of a cut down tree in some way to produce the kiln dried fuel that we supply.
Our logs produce heat not smoke. Smoke is created when the MC of the log is such that the log has to partly consume itself in order to boil off the moisture, before it can burn the rest to produce heat. The greater the MC, the more smoke, the less heat is produced. After all, you wouldn’t expect to get much heat from burning a bucket of water would you?
Heating your house with a logburning stove relies on two things, the heat output from your stove and the insulation/draught proofing of your house. If you maximise the heat output and minimise the heat loss, you will be warm as toast all winter…with some stoves you can even make toast as well!
One of the absolute advantages of buying your kiln dried logs from www.logs.co.com is that the firewood we make and sell can be bought today and used today. You don’t need to hold it in the garden for 2 years. You can buy in enough for the next few months, and then order some more as your stocks start to drop, safe in the knowledge that what you buy from us in December will be of the exact same quality that you buy from us today.

We are NEVER going to deliver you a load which doesn’t meet our own high standards.
How do I know that our wood is consistently at that level? Because I use it myself in my own stove. I don’t use offcuts or scraps that I can’t sell, I use the same wood that I supply to our customers, so that I can see, week in week out, what the product is doing. Our customers are the most important part of the equation. The firewood can be the best product in the world, but if we don’t have customers for it, then it’s pointless. Once someone has become a customer, the next most important thing is that we retain that customer for the future, by producing a fantastic product at a price that is comparable with ordinary seasoned firewood.
Seasoned Firewood comes in two guises. There are the guys who split, store and dry it for 18 months/2 years and sell it as properly seasoned. You need to have a huge amount of space and stock, to prepare a seasons worth of firewood 2 years in advance. There are not too many of these type of producers around. The second guise is someone who cuts it, splits it, loads it into a lorry or builders bag (which doesn’t breathe so the wood sweats) and delivers it onto your driveway in a heap, takes the cash and leaves you to clear up and find out that it smokes like the blazes! Yes, it might have been cheap but you won’t be going back for more will you? Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you buy your firewood by WEIGHT! I will be disappointed if my logs weigh more than somebody else’s, as the drier they are, the lighter they are.
So, our firewood, delivered in barrow bags so we can deliver the wood to where you want it, not tipped on your driveway (although we do offer a tipped onto your driveway service if you really want it!) is clean, dry and ready to burn. I have yet to find a delivery we cannot do, and that includes 4 barrow bags this week, delivered to Bushey, Herts, where the house was a Victorian mid terrace and the rear access was THROUGH the house! It was entertaining, the front door was offset to the hallway, so we had a swerve once we were in the hall, and then through into the kitchen, a 90 degree turn and then another 90 degree turn to the back door!! No problem!! Pick a nice dry day for that sort of delivery though unless you want wet tyre tracks through your kitchen!!
So, our log prices are held at last seasons rates – you can buy 4 barrow bags at £37.50 per bag including delivery! The bags are well packed and stretch, so whilst the notional size of 4 bags is 1m3 we estimate that the actual volume is more like 1.2/1.3m3. Don’t be misled by someone telling you a builders bag is 1m3. Its not. By a long way. Most builders bags are 80cmx80cmx80xcm which is 0.52m3!!
So delivery is free, and I don’t charge a deposit for the barrow bags. Why? I will pick up the used bags from you when I deliver your next order. I’m that confident that once you have used our logs you will put us into the speed dial of your phone! If you don’t reorder, I need to work a bit harder!!
Get your bulk stock in now!! Order online at www.logs.co.com or telephone 01525 876556 which is the main number for Chalgrave Golf Club, and our staff will take your order over the phone.

Cheers Steve
